Diversity of Growth Rates Maximizes Phytoplankton Productivity in an Eddying Ocean

نویسندگان

چکیده

In the subtropical gyres, phytoplankton rely on eddies for transporting nutrients from depth to euphotic zone. But, what controls rate of nutrient supply new production? We show that vertical flux both depends motion within eddying flow and varies nonlinearly with growth rate. Flux is maximized when matches inverse decorrelation timescale motion. Using a three-dimensional ocean model linear uptake model, we find productivity 1/3 day?1, which corresponds submesoscale dynamics. Variability in frequency across different physical features favors production rates. Such growth-transport feedback can generate diversity community structure at submesoscales higher net presence diversity.

Global relationship between phytoplankton diversity and productivity in the ocean

The shape of the productivity-diversity relationship (PDR) for marine phytoplankton has been suggested to be unimodal, that is, diversity peaking at intermediate levels of productivity. However, there are few observations and there has been little attempt to understand the mechanisms that would lead to such a shape for planktonic organisms. Here we use a marine ecosystem model together with the...

Pigment-specific rates of phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing in the open subarctic Pacific Ocean

A long-standing hypothesis states that low year-round phytoplankton biomass in the open subarctic Pacific Ocean is maintained by herbivorous grazing. To evaluate the balance between phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing, we carried out seawater dilution experiments at two subarctic Pacific locations in June and September 1987. Pigment-specific phytoplankton growth and grazing rates ...

An assessment of phytoplankton primary productivity in the Arctic Ocean from satellite ocean color/in situ chlorophyll‐a based models

We investigated 32 net primary productivity (NPP) models by assessing skills to reproduce integrated NPP in the Arctic Ocean. The models were provided with two sources each of surface chlorophyll-a concentration (chlorophyll), photosynthetically available radiation (PAR), sea surface temperature (SST), and mixed-layer depth (MLD). The models were most sensitive to uncertainties in surface chlor...

Growth rates of phytoplankton under fluctuating light

1. The effect of light fluctuations on the growth rates of four species of freshwater phytoplankton was investigated. Experimental light regimes included constant irradiance and fluctuations of a step function form, with equal proportion of high (maximum of 240 mmol photons m s) and low light (minimum of 5 mmol photons m s) (or dark) in a period. Fluctuations of 1, 8 and 24-h periods were impos...

Impact of ocean phytoplankton diversity on phosphate uptake.

We have a limited understanding of the consequences of variations in microbial biodiversity on ocean ecosystem functioning and global biogeochemical cycles. A core process is macronutrient uptake by microorganisms, as the uptake of nutrients controls ocean CO2 fixation rates in many regions. Here, we ask whether variations in ocean phytoplankton biodiversity lead to novel functional relationshi...
